Innovational Research Incentives Scheme Vici - Social Sciences and Humanities
Dutch Research Council
Vici and the NWO Talent programme
Vici is a funding instrument from the NWO Talent programme (previously the Innovational Research Incentives Scheme). The NWO Talent programme offers individual grants to talented, creative researchers. The funding instrument makes it possible to do research of one's own choice. Since the NWO Talent programme was set up in 2000, nearly 2000 talented researchers have received funding. The NWO Talent programme is funded by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science.
Individual grant for researchers in the stage of consolidation and further development of their leadership and research group
The aim of the NWO Talent programme (Veni, Vidi and Vici) is to provide creative space for adventurous, talented, groundbreaking researchers in which they can do research of their own choice, advance their own line of research and further develop their talent. With an individual grant, the researchers can develop their own innovative line of research that can acquire a structural embedding within the research institute.
The Vici target group consists of researchers in the stage of consolidating and further developing their leadership/research group and a Vici grant contributes to the development of researchers in this area. Researchers who are eligible for a Vici grant must possess exceptional academic qualities that clearly outdistance standard abilities, and proven leadership and mentorship qualities.
Research domain Healthcare Research and Medical Sciences
NWO is organised in 4 domains:
Science
Social Sciences and Humanities;
Applied and Engineering Sciences; and
Healthcare Research and Medical Sciences (ZonMw).
ZonMw realises the NWO Talent programme (Veni, Vidi and Vici) for the domain Healthcare Research and Medical Sciences on behalf of NWO (Dutch Research Council).
Financement
Duration and budget
The Vici grant round is open for researchers who, on 1 March of the year of submission, gained their PhD no more than 15 years ago. The Vici grant is intended for the funding of innovative scientific research, and thus provide researchers with the opportunity to expand their research group and further develop the line of research they are pursuing.
The Vici researcher can set to work with a maximum grant of €1,500,000.
Researchers may submit a proposal for Vici on a maximum of 2 occasions.
Foreign researchers can also apply for this funding.

Criteria
The assessment criterion for the pre-proposals is:
Quality of the researcher
The assessment criteria for the full proposals are:
Quality and innovative character of the research proposal (75%)
Scientific and/or social impact (25%)
Procedure
The Vici competition will be assessed by four committees: four committees corresponding to the NWO domains: Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH), NWO-Science domain (Science), Applied and Engineering Sciences (AES), Health Research and Development (ZonMw). You are currently on the webpage for ZonMw.
Vici applications are assessed in a domain-wide competition: all applications from different disciplines within one domain will be compared in one competition. ZonMw uses a broad-based assessment committee of academics to advise on the merits and prioritisation of the applications.
Applicants must first submit a pre-proposal. These are assessed by the assessment committee, which then makes a recommendation on whether or not to submit a proposal. Proposals are sent to external referees. Applicants are given the opportunity to respond to the referees’ reports (‘rebuttal’). Next, the full proposals, the reviews and the rebuttals are assessed by the respective assessment committees. They invite a selection of the candidates for an interview. Based on the application, the referees’ reports, the rebuttal and the interview the assessment committee advises the accredited board of NWO.
All proposals must be submitted via ISAAC, NWO's electronic application system. The only exceptions to this rule are proposals to the Health Research and Development domain. These proposals can only be submitted via My ZonMw.
Requis d'admission
Vici is aimed at senior researchers with academic qualities that clearly exceed what is customary within the international peer group, as well as established leadership- and mentorship skills.
Researchers may only submit an application if they have obtained their PhD in the fifteen years preceding the benchmark date of this round, 1 March 2025. An extension to the above career-dependent submission period may be possible under specific circumstances (see Section 3.4.2 of the Call for proposals).
