Description courte :

The BEWARE Fellowships 2 call of the SPW Research aims to promote the mobility of researchers in transnational mobility to Wallonia. The researchers will spend half of their time in a Walloon company and the other half in a university, college or research center.
ULB units and laboratories having their activity in the Brussels area are also eligible to this call.

Description complète :

The BEWARE 2 Fellowships is a call for proposals aims at promoting the mobility of highly qualified researchers (a) towards companies (b) and universities (or accredited research centers or research centers attached to universities) in Wallonia / Wallonia-Brussels Federation (c). The 3 actors (a, b and c) will have to be identified at the time of the submission of the project. The deliverable of the research must be unique, quantifiable, clearly identified, exhaustively described and justified in terms of its potential for valorization and its innovative character. The duration of the project is 18 to 36 months.

(a) The Researcher
The researcher must hold a PhD degree or have equivalent research experience (minimum 4 years). At the closing date of the call, he/she must be in a situation of transnational mobility, i.e. have spent less than 12 months in Belgium during the last 36 months (excluding vacations).

For the researcher who will need a visa and/or work permit, the host may use a "scientific visa" which exempts the researcher from requiring a work permit and offers a faster process for the granting of the residence permit.
The researcher may not be replaced in the event of withdrawal.

(b) The Company
Any company with at least one place of business in Wallonia is eligible as a co-supervisor. If the company is a spin-off, a spin-out, a subsidiary or has an organic link with the partner (c), it will be necessary to justify the roles and the contributions of each one, it being understood that the tasks of the work plan must be assigned according to the quality of the partners.

(c) The University Unit
The second co-supervisor will be either a university partner (in the case of a ULB laboratory) or an approved research center or a university college unit.

A collaboration agreement between b and c must be annexed at the submission stage.

The stay of these researchers should allow an increase of the Walloon scientific and technological potential through, for example :
- the development and validation of new products, processes or services intended to be industrially exploited in the short term
- the acquisition and development of a new technology
- the development of the researcher's skills.

In addition to the proposal, the researcher will be required to attach a Personal Career Plan Project (PCPP). This PCPP is written by the researcher and the co-supervisors. Its objective is to establish a research training program and scientific objectives that meet the researcher's personal needs. Some guidelines are given in the call for proposal.

Research topic

Even if topic of the research is totally free, in order to ensure that the project is in line with the needs of Walloon companies, it is advisable that the project is in line with the regional strategy of the sector in terms of technological innovation and priority investments, or in promising themes for Wallonia: the Strategic Innovation Domains or the domains that are specifically highlighted in the Regional Policy Declaration, such as the space domain or cyber security.

BEWARE2 is funded jointly by the European Commission (contract 847587 - Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (COFUND)).

Critères d’admission/attribution :

Eligibility Criteria

The application must be complete:
- submitted online before the deadline by the academic partner in consultation with the partner and the identified researcher
- with the formal commitment from the 3 partners

The research :
- aims at the development of a single new product, process or service or the acquisition and valorization of new knowledge likely to contribute to the development of the SME or the industrial fabric in Wallonia
- includes a credible plan for the use/valorization of results
- cannot have already been the subject of public funding
- falls within the competence of the Walloon Region.

The candidate will be:
- a person with a PhD or with at least 4 years of professional experience in research
- of any nationality in a situation of mobility, i.e. not having stayed in Belgium for more than 12 months, on a professional basis, over the last three years, at the time of submission.

The researcher must be known at the time of submission and cannot be modified.

Financement :

The subsidy covers:
(1) the remuneration of the researcher at the postdoctoral researcher scale according to the available ad hoc scale
(2) an annual lump sum of EUR 6,000 for operating costs
(3) an annual lump sum of 3,000 euros to cover the researcher's mobility expenses, to be paid in full to the researcher.

In case of a collaboration between a university unit and a company, the financing granted by the SPW is 85%. The partner company brings the additional 15%.

Pour postuler / aide du Département Recherche :

Proposals must be submitted online by noon on June 30, 2023. The call requires the commitment of the partners as well as the deposit of a collaboration agreement at the time of submission.

Please do not hesitate to contact the TTO for assistance in finding an industrial partner, as well as to facilitate discussions with the industrial partner and to determine the framework of the collaboration at the beginning of the discussions.

The TTO is also in support of contacts with the managers of the call for proposals in order to organize an information meeting between the managers of the call for proposals and the project partners if necessary. At the request of the supervisor(s), an information meeting may be organised between the managers of the call for proposals and the project partners before the final submission of a proposal.
