Sport and Politics Sport and Politics

Abstract : Though all sportive movements proclaim that they are apolitical, sports and politics have profound relations. Every country promotes public sports for the reason of public health, but also for producing champions. There are different types of public politics of sports. It will be very interest to analyze what are China’s national and local sport policies and to do comparative studies with other countries. Meanwhile, sport has profound political meanings because it is used by nations to promote their national images, a kind of soft power, among foreign countries. Thus, to study sports is to study a society. Doping, corruption, local identities, relations between men and women, the roles played by Medias, the effects of globalization, the antagonism between regions or between countries…we can analyze the nationalism through the sports. In this way we can also study the identification of supporters to their team or cultural differences. Different sports have different success stories in different countries. In this way, this theme that is very well researched in European and American universities leaves us many subjects to research concerning China.
