Mechanisms of visual word recognition : crosslinguistic comparisons

Abstract : For most adults, visual word recognition is a rapid, easy, and irrepressible activity. Roughly one quarter of second is necessary to recognize a printed word and to distinguish it from the thousands of other words stored in memory. Despite this apparent simplicity, the mechanisms enabling readers to recognize a single word are highly complex. Among the timely issues in the field of visual word recognition, the question of the functional units of word perception is central. It is well accepted that small units within words are perceived and processed during word processing in alphabetical languages, and this issue extends to logographic scripts such as Chinese. However, the nature of these units and the cues sustaining their extraction by the perceptual system are still a matter of active debate. The present project aims at investigating these issues and encompass a more ambitious goal in comparing languages with different writing systems, namely French, English and Chinese. To investigate the perception of units within words in the two orthographic system, we will use various tasks. One example is the composite matching task. This paradigm has been shown to be very promising to compare holistic vs. analytic processing in visual objects, but also in visual word processing as currently examined in a ongoing collaboration with Hong-Kong University.
