|Abstract : This doctoral research is part of the project Collaboration and exchange between architects, engineers, contractors and industries in building in Belgium (1870-2015): lessons from the past and emerging collaborative approaches. The project is supervised by the ADEB-VBA Chair, recently awarded to prof. R. Devos.
A full time research mandate is offered by the Chair ADEB-VBA, for 2 years, starting September 2017.
Applications are due by Friday, June 30, 2017 (noon), by email to Rika.Devos@ulb.ac.be
The central hypothesis of the doctoral research is that the stress that is put today on integrated approaches in design and construction, involving different professionals at early stages of a project, has a long history influenced by the changing technological, economical and discipline-bound constraints of building. Evolutions and moments of crisis in these constraints have affected the modes of collaboration, and with it, design and construction methods.
With its focus on the actors of building and their interactions, the research will explore the changing realities of know-how and employment of the different professional groups and engage in an alternative history of building in which the built environment is considered as a shared product of professional exchanges between architects, engineers, contractors and the industries.
The project focuses on Belgium and involves research in archives.
