The impact of literacy acquisition on brain and cognition


Abstract : The acquisition of literacy, namely of the capacity to read and write, is perhaps the most important transformation that humans impose on their own brains. An increasingly larger number of studies show that literacy acquisition profoundly modifies several cognitive systems not only in the language domain but also in the visual non-linguistic domain, and perhaps even at higher cognitive processing levels (e.g., reasoning, executive functions, working memory). The aim of the project is to examine in details the impact of literacy acquisition on one of these domains, using a cross-cultural approach and/or the comparison between illiterate and literate adult populations.
