Mechanisms of pancreatic beta cell dysfunction and death in diabetes mellitus


Abstract : Our research focuses on the molecular mechanisms regulating insulitis and beta cell apoptosis in type 1 diabetes and on the search for novel approaches to prevent the progressive loss of beta cell mass in diabetes. There is particular emphasis on the use of advanced functional genomics tools (RNA sequencing, pathway analysis etc) to understand the gene networks that regulate progressive beta cell loss in diabetes. Other areas under investigation include the mitochondrial pathways of apoptosis, the cross talk mitochondria - ER and the role for type 1 diabetes candidate genes for beta cell dysfunction and death in diabetes.
