Super-Chandrasekhar white dwarfs and type Ia supernovae


Abstract : It has been recently suggested that white dwarfs endowed with huge magnetic fields could have a mass well above the upper limit found by Chandrasekhar. The existence of such so called super-Chandrasekhar white dwarfs seems to be supported by the observations of overluminous type Ia supernovae like SN 2006gz and SN 2009dc. Given the wide use of type Ia supernovae as standard candles in observational cosmology, a better understanding of their progenitors is of utmost importance. The aim of the project is to shed light on overluminous type Ia supernovae by modelling strongly magnetised white dwarfs.
