Unraveling the mechanisms responsible for the regulation of expression, targeting, intracellular trafficking and functionality of aquaporin 5.


Abstract : Aquaporins are transmembrane proteins permeable to water. Aquaporin-5 (AQP5) is expressed in the salivary glands and the lung where it contributes to saliva secretion, lung submucosal gland fluid secretion and type-I pneumocytes water permeability. Furthermore, AQP5 is involved in pathophysiological conditions affecting salivary glands and lungs such as xerostomia of multiple origins, asthma, lung cancer, pulmonary edema. The present project aims at unraveling the mechanisms responsible for the regulation of the expression, targeting, intracellular trafficking and functionality of AQP5 in order to better understand its roles in pathological conditions, and identify new therapeutic strategies.
