Development of sophisticated trigger algorithms on FPGAs for the CMS upgrades

Abstract : We propose to develop trigger algorithms based on FPGA for mid-term and long-term upgrades of the CMS detector at the LHC. Nowadays FPGAs become more and more powerful offering the possibility to execute more sophisticated trigger algorithms. Development of new trigger algorithms are required for the LHC upgrades of phase-1 (CMS Muon upgrade) and phase-2 (tracking trigger). The PhD student will be integrated in the ULB R&D group of CMS. Participation to the running of the experiment at CERN is expected. This PhD can be made in co-supervision with the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP-Peking).
